Deceased Name: David Oxman

David Oxman, longtime resident of Hibbing, passed away on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at age 86.

He was born in 1922 in Duluth to Bill and Mary Oxman and was one of seven siblings. He graduated from Central High School in Duluth and went on to continue his education at Duluth State Teachers College (now UMD). David was a veteran of WWII serving from 1942-1946 as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and Signal Corps, Warrington, England, in the division of cryptography and communications.

In 1946 he married Tessy (Stein) Oxman, and in 1954, moved to Hibbing where he established his family and became a prominent businessman and active member of the community. He was a partner in Stein Rexall Drugs for several years, and later held the position of executive vice president and general manager of Range Television Cable Company for 20 years. As a cable professional, he served two terms as president of the Minnesota State Cable Association. Although he was dedicated to his career, his heart was in many volunteer organizations and community initiatives, some of which included serving as chairman of the Red Cross Disaster Committee for 25 years, chairman of the Hibbing Winter Frolic for 20 years, appointee to the Governor's Commission for Human Rights, executive board member of North Star Hospice for 15 years, president of Community Concert Association, and an active member of B'nai Brith, and Agudath Achim Synagogue in Hibbing. In 1987, David was chosen as Titan of Taconite, an honor and recognition of his contribution to the city of Hibbing, and also named Honorary Skipper and Commodore of the Minneapolis Aquatennial Association.

David enjoyed and excelled in many sporting and leisure activities including golf, skiing, skating and fishing. He was a longtime member of Mesaba Country Club. He was also an avid bridge player and instructor, heading the Hibbing Bridge Club for 40 years, and serving as regional director of the National Association of Contract Bridge, and president of the Minnesota State Association of Contract Bridge.

David was dedicated to his large extended family and was treasurer of the Oreck Family Foundation, raising and distributing funds that were used to support family members in their higher education.

He was a devoted husband for over 63 years, a caring father of his two daughters, a proud grandfather to his four grandchildren, and delighted at becoming a great-grandfather in 2008.

David will be remembered for his great integrity, countless acts of kindness, and his love and devotion to his family. Many have recalled that David was "real gentleman" a kind and thoughtful friend and mentor. David was the consummate Master of Ceremonies and toastmaster, having a special talent for enhancing public events and family celebrations.

David is survived by his wife, Tessy, daughters Susan (Oxman) Horowitz and Lisa (Oxman) Etziony (Shmulik), brother Jerome Oxman (Miriam), sister Rene Oxman, grandchildren Rachelle Horowitz, Natan Etziony (Yael), Amitai Etziony, and Tali Etziony, and great-grandson Yisroel Meir Etziony, as well as dear brother- and sister-in-law Jerry and Leone Altman, sister-in-law Etheldoris Grais, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
